Safety Tip of the Month

PERSONAL SAFETY: While walking, jogging, or biking

(Plain Press, August 2015)

  • Send the message while you are out and about that you are calm, and confident.
  • Avoid isolated areas. Use familiar routes in well-lit, populated areas, and avoid alleys, deserted or wooded areas and parking lots. Especially at night, bike or jog with a friend and wear reflective clothing. Don’t use stereo headphones so you can remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Accept rides only from people you know, and trust. If harassed by someone in a car, quickly walk or run in the opposite direction, toward safety. If you become frightened, or attacked, yell loudly for help.
