Reader recommends Citizen Police Academy as means to bridge gap between police and community

To the Editor,

(Plain Press, March 2017) Regarding the photo exhibition put together by Al Wasco and featured in the February issue of the Plain Press– in 1999, I had an idea similar to Mr. Wasco’s so I enrolled in Cleveland’s Citizen Police Academy, hoping to encourage communication between police and minorities, outcasts, the psychiatrically-labeled and such. It was more than worthwhile. And I’ll never forget Officer Jeff Stanczyk’s impassioned presentation.

I would recommend the academy to all, especially, these days, young African Americans and Native Americans. They, (and all families of victims of crimes in high places,) and the families of fallen officers, too – we all have more in common than at first meets the eye. Indeed, we must learn to stand together.
