What’s on the Ballot? – November 2023 general election

(Plain Press, November 2023) Below is a summary of candidates and issues that will appear on the November 7, 2023, General Election ballot. Registered voters can view a sample ballot by going to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections website at: www.cuyahogaballot.boe.ohio.gov

Voting

     Registered voters can vote at the polls on election day, vote by mail by requesting an absentee ballot or vote in person at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

     Polls will be open on November 7, 2023, from 6:30 a.m.  – 7:30 p.m.

     Registered voters can request a vote by mail application by calling the Board of Elections at 216-443-8683 or by going to the Board of Elections’ website at: www.boe.cuyahogacounty.gov and printing out an application.

     Registered voters can also vote early in person at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections at 2925 Euclid Avenue. The Board of Election’s office will be open for voting: Monday, October 30, from 7:30 a.m. -7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, October 31, from 7:30 a.m.- 8:30 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, November 1-3, from 7:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 4, from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.; and Sunday, November 5, from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

     Some helpful guides for voters are available online. The League of Women Voters of Ohio at www.lwvohio.org offers a guide to Ohio election rules and the types of Identification you can use when voting. The website www.judge4yourself.com offers ratings for judicial candidates.

Cleveland Municipal Court – Judges

     There are six judicial positions in Cleveland Municipal Court on the ballot. Two candidates are running unopposed. They are Sydney Strickland Saffold and Michelle D. Earley. The four additional judicial positions in Municipal Court have competitive races.

     The two candidates for a full judicial term commencing 1-2-2024 are Jazmin G. Torres-Lugo and Joseph F. Russo.

     Four candidates are competing for the judicial term commencing on 1-3-2024: Bridget M. O’Brien, Jocelyn Conwell, JD Dow, and Joanna N. Lopez Inman.

     Two candidates are competing for the judicial term commencing on 1-4-2024: Sheila Turner McCall and Timothy W. Clary.

     Three candidates are competing for the judicial term commencing on 1-5-2024: Jeff Johnson, Mark R. Majer and Heather McCollough.

Cleveland Municipal Court – Clerk

There are two candidates running for Clerk of Municipal Court: Earle B. Turner and Brian C. Kazy.

Cleveland City Council: Ward 11

Two candidates, Michael Hardy and Danny Kelly, are competing to fill an unexpired term ending 12-31-2025

Statewide Ballot Issues

There are two statewide ballot issues:

Issue 1

A Self-Executing Amendment Relating to Abortion and Other Reproductive Decisions

Proposed Constitutional Amendment

Proposed by Initiative Petition

To enact Section 22 of Article I of the Constitution of the State of Ohio

A majority yes vote is necessary for the amendment to pass.

Issue 2:

To Commercialize, Regulate, Legalize, and Tax the Adult Use of Cannabis

Proposed by Initiative Petition

To enact Chapter 3780 of the Ohio Revised Code

A majority yes vote is necessary for the law to pass.

A majority affirmative vote is necessary for passage.

City of Cleveland Ballot Issue

Issue 38

Proposed Charter Amendment to implement the People’s Budget process by which residents make binding decisions on how to spend a portion of public money.
