(Plain Press October 2024) House Bill (HB) 590, also known as the Hunger Free Campus bill, will ensure that no college student will go hungry by providing free meals to those students who are eligible. HB 590 has been introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives. Its primary sponsors are House District 14 Democrat Sean P. Brennan and House District 10 Republican Dave Dobos. The bill proposes that qualifying students are: eligible for SNAP and have satisfied the SNAP work requirement; are at least a part time student at their college or university; and are enrolled in an accredited institution with a major that leads to an in-demand occupation.
Students can visit: https://topjobs.ohio.gov/top-jobs-list/ohios-top-jobs-list to access the list of “in-demand jobs;” see if they are eligible to participate in work study; or if they have an expected family contribution (EFC) of $0.
College students applying to SNAP will have to fill out an additional form with the support of their institution (needs a signature!):
