In Memory: Timothy Barrett, March 9, 1951 – December 4, 2024

(Plain Press February 2025) Timothy Barrett is known to many Cleveland residents for his Cleveland Sacred Architecture lectures and tours. Barrett, an architectural historian, freely offered his assistance and advice to many individuals working to restore historic homes, especially in his Ohio City neighborhood. Barrett’s work in the City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program and before that the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Cuyahoga County Archives fit well with his passion for the history and architecture of the City of Cleveland.

Barrett’s family hosted friends at a visitation and service on January 25th at the Corrigan Craciun Funeral Home at 20820 Lorain Road in Fairview Park.

On the funeral home website (corrigancraciun.com) the family placed information about Timothy Barrett’s life, his wife Rebecca, their sons Oliver and Ian and their families.

On the website, the family also shared some of Timothy’s history that helps to explain his love of sacred architecture and his and Rebecca’s devotion to restoring and transforming their historic house on Whitman Avenue in Ohio City where they raised their sons.

As told by the narrative on the funeral home website, living very close to St. Stephen Church where he served as an altar boy as a child, and attending high school at St. Michael’s on Scranton, exposed Barrett at a young age to two of the Near West Side’s most beautiful churches.

Barrett’s time as a staff person at the Cuyahoga County Archives, when it was located on Franklin Avenue, allowed him to research the history and architecture of the Cleveland and to develop an exhibit on Cleveland’s Sacred Architecture.

At the Western Reserve Historical Society, Barrett’s knowledge of the history of the area expanded even further.

Barrett continued to lecture on Cleveland’s Sacred Architecture for many years. His last lecture being this past summer at St. Stephen’s Church where his love of sacred architecture began.

Tim Barrett, Was a gem of a person with real talent for historic preservation and architecture. While running the Neighborhood Housing Services program on Cleveland’s Near West Side (Now Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway) in the 1970s or early 1980s, I helped Tim acquire his lovely home on Whitman Avenue from an older ethnic couple who I knew. Tim was the right person to own such a lovely house which he took care of wonderfully. He also advised us on how to promote historic values and preservation while preserving the basic housing stock of the neighborhood. Tim was a wealth of knowledge who was always willing to share it.
