(Plain Press February 2025) A January 18th article in the NEOtrans blog by Ian McDaniel titled “McCafferty site to be senior housing” describes plans to demolish McCafferty Health Center at 4242 Lorain Avenue to make way for a 72-unit apartment building. The article says the project is a joint venture between Ohio City Inc and Pennrose LLC. Plans call for the apartments to be affordable to senior citizens with incomes between 30 percent and 70 percent of the median income of the Cleveland-Elyria Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) [Editor’s Note: median annual income of the MSA was $66,481 in 2022 – 30% of that would be $19,944 and 70% of that would be $66,537].

In addition to the apartments, the NEOtrans article says the proposal calls for communal space and space for non-profit/social services on the first floor of the new project.

The article in NEOtrans says that City of Cleveland’s Department of Public Health services such as immunizations and pregnancy testing still provided in the McCafferty Health Center building would be moved to the Northern Ohio Blanket Mills Building at 3160 W. 33rd in the Clark Fulton neighborhood. The recently rehabilitated Northern Ohio Blanket Mills Building is to the rear of the Lin Omni Center’s parking lot and just north of St. Rocco Parish.

The Ohio City Incorporated online newsletter sent out on January 21st offered additional information on the roles Ohio City Incorporated and Pennrose LLC would play in the project. The newsletter says, “Pennrose will partner with Ohio City, Inc. to co-own and co-manage the new development.”
