West 73rd Street Extension opens new route to Edgewater Park
(Plain Press, January 2016) A ribbon cutting ceremony on December 12th marked the opening of the new W. 73rd Extension to Edgewater Park. The $24 million Extension extends West 73rd Street from Father Frascati Drive northward under the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks and along the Shoreway to connect with existing access to Edgewater Park. Work on the Extension began in July 2013.
Along with a new roadway to carry cars, the W. 73rd extension includes landscaping, a sidewalk for pedestrians on the West side of the road, a bike lane for bicycles coming out of the park and a shared lane marking, or sharrow, for bikes and cars going into Edgewater Park.
The W. 73rd Extension is part of a $95 million three phase Lakefront West Project which will transform the West Shoreway into a boulevard, improve access to the lakefront for residents in nearby neighborhoods, create new green space, and new routes for pedestrians and cyclists.
